Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are aesthetic treatments used to restore volume to areas of the face that have experienced a loss of natural fat, such as around the sides of the mouth. As we age, our skin can begin to lose its natural elasticity and volume, resulting in wrinkles, creases, and other cosmetic concerns. Dermal fillers are used to smooth out the appearance of these lines and restore youthful fullness to the face. The treatment can be completed in a single office visit without the need for surgery or downtime. The effects of this rejuvenation can last for numerous years, depending on the filler selected. A skilled cosmetic dentist can help you determine which type of filler will best meet your needs and goals.

How Are Dermal Fillers Used?

Dermal fillers are used to add volume to the skin, creating a more youthful appearance. This is a minimally invasive procedure that may require only topical anesthesia. The type of filler that is used determines the end result. Some last longer than others and may be better for deeper lines or folds, while others are best suited for treating fine lines around the lips. Most results last between six months and two years, depending on the product used and the areas treated.

There are many different types of injectables offered at your dental clinic in Anchorage, AK. The type that you have will depend on your goals, how many injections you need, and what your budget is. Your dentist will go over the best option for your individual needs and help you decide which is best for you. Undergoing an injectable treatment at your dentist’s office does not mean that you will have to have surgery. It is a simple outpatient procedure that can be done quickly with little to no downtime. Recovery is usually quick and minimal. Most of the side effects are mild and go away within a few days. Your dentist may recommend over-the-counter pain medication to help with any discomfort during the first few days after the procedure.

Correcting Volume Loss with Dermal Filler

At Denali Dental Care & Facial Aesthetics, we offer a variety of dermal fillers. We carry the Allergan family of fillers such as Juvederm, as well as Revanesse Versa+Lips and Belotero Balance.

How they work:As we age, we lose volume in our temples, cheeks, and lips and develop expression lines around our mouth and lines around our lips. Dermal fillers can replace the lost volume and combat the signs of aging while creating youthful and natural-looking results. Most dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid which is a safe and naturally occurring substance found in the body. Dermal fillers provide immediate volumization to the treatment area.

Treatment areas: Dermal fillers can be used for treatment in the temples, cheeks, lips, expression lines around the mouth, radial lip lines around the lips, the chin, the jawline, and even the earlobes.

Age Requirement: 21 years old

Contraindications: Dermal fillers are contraindicated in patients who are pregnant or lactating (nursing), patients who are allergic to lidocaine, or patients with multiple allergies or high sensitivity to medications. Dermal fillers are also contraindicated in patients with an acute illness, cold, or virus with or without fevers. If you are ill, please reschedule your appointment after your symptoms have completely resolved. Dermal fillers around the mouth should be avoided within 2 weeks of any dental work.

Before your appointment:We ask our patients to avoid blood thinning medications and supplements for two weeks prior to their treatment in order to decrease the likelihood of bruising. Avoiding alcoholic beverages for 24 hours prior to your appointment may also help decrease bruising. Taking over-the-counter Arnica tablets for 3 days prior to your appointment may also be beneficial in reducing bruising and swelling.

Side effects, risks, and possible complications: Patients should be aware of the risk of post-treatment discomfort, swelling, redness, bruising, and discoloration. For this reason, we ask that patients plan these appointments at least 2 weeks before any upcoming events. Patients who have a history of cold sores should be aware that dermal fillers can reactivate Herpes. Our nurse practitioner can prescribe medication to help resolve a cold sore in the event this occurs. More serious possible complications include granuloma or biofilm formation and the risk of vascular occlusion or compression. Our providers take precautions during your treatment to minimize these risks.

After your appointment:After dermal fillers, patients should not apply makeup for 24 hours. Post-treatment instructions include no vigorous exercise for 24 hrs and no rubbing or manipulating the treatment area(s).  Use gentle products on your face until you have healed.

Results: Dermal fillers provide immediate volumization to the treatment area. Results can last between 6-24 months depending on the product used and the area treated.
