When we think of BOTOX Cosmetic, we typically think of the anti-aging benefits. Between smoothing the lines around our mouth, eyes and forehead, BOTOX can be a great tool for patients who want to look younger.

But that’s not all BOTOX can do. Did you know BOTOX can actually ease pain and treat medical conditions?

What Is BOTOX Cosmetic?

Most of us know what BOTOX does – it relaxes muscles in the face, allowing skin to look smooth again by reducing wrinkles – but not many know what BOTOX is made from. It’s created using Clostridium botulinum, a naturally occurring bacteria. While botulinum toxin can lead to botulism, which can cause death in high doses, BOTOX contains a very small and safe amount of the toxin, so BOTOX patients need not worry. In most cases, the worst side effects of BOTOX include minor redness or swelling after the procedure.

How BOTOX Treats Disorders

In dentistry, we see patients suffering from muscular disorders every day. Muscular disorders can cause significant discomfort, and by continuing to use the affected muscles without treatment, you’re putting yourself at risk of irritating the muscles more.

The three treatments we see most often in BOTOX are for nonsurgical facelift, temporomandibular joint disorders, and recurring headaches.

Nonsurgical Facelift

A traditional, surgical facelift is a comparatively intense procedure. The skin around the face is removed and the rest of the skin is, quite literally, lifted to restore the look of the face. By using BOTOX, however, you can forgo the knife with similar results with little to no recovery time. Nonsurgical facelifts are minimally invasive, can be done over your lunch hour and you can return to normal life immediately.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorders

We see patients with temporomandibular joint disorders, or TMJ, every day. The temporomandibular joint is what connects your jaw to the top half of your skull, and allows your jaw to move comfortably. If that joint becomes irritated or inflamed, common among people who grind or clench their teeth, talking and chewing can become painful. BOTOX forces muscles to relax, which means a BOTOX treatment can give you immediate relief from TMJ. Patients often come back for an injection once every six months to keep the joint relaxed and stress-free.

Recurring Headaches

Many of our patients are surprised to learn that, here at Denali Dental Care, we treat headaches. Yes, headaches can be caused by poor oral health, or by an abnormal or misaligned bite. Many times, we can trace our patients’ headaches back to TMJ, as a misaligned jaw puts unneeded stress on the joint and can inflame the area, sending pain throughout the jaw and head. It can also trigger migraines.

BOTOX injections relax the muscles causing the stress, reducing headaches and migraines.
