Afraid you will have difficulty cleaning around braces? Don’t want to give up your favorite foods to get teeth straightened? If any of those describes how you feel about orthodontics, then you’re in luck, because Invisalign lets you straighten your teeth without metal wires and brackets. And that means you don’t have to worry about all the things that come with braces, including giving up food or learning to clean around the wires.

Benefits of Invisalign

Invisalign is a relatively new approach to straightening teeth, but it’s grown tremendously in popularity. That’s because it offers many benefits over traditional braces, including:

  • No brackets or wires
  • Removable aligners
  • No diet restrictions
  • No special cleaning tools or techniques
  • Little irritation of lips and cheeks
  • Faster than traditional braces

The most obvious benefit of it is that there are no brackets or wires attached to your teeth. Instead, Invisalign uses clear plastic aligners. These aligners are removable, which has many benefits.

Because the aligners can be removed for eating, you don’t have any diet restrictions. You can continue to eat all the foods you enjoy, including popcorn, pizza, bagels, steak, and more. There’s no worry that foods will dislodge brackets, nor will food get stuck in them. And that’s another benefit of Invisalign. The removable aligners mean that you won’t get food stuck in them, so there’s no special cleaning required. Just brush and floss normally. You will have to brush and floss more often, but there’s no need for special tools or techniques.

The plastic aligners are also smooth and comfortable–they won’t poke, scrape, or irritate your lips and cheeks.

Plus, with recent innovations, Invisalign is faster than ever–faster than traditional braces in many cases.

How Invisalign Works

All orthodontic treatments work on the same principle. Your body has mechanisms that allow it to reshape your bones in response to specific forces. Orthodontics works by applying controlled force to your teeth so that your body will remodel the bone around the teeth.

In traditional braces, this force is applied by brackets and wires. With Invisalign, the force is applied with clear plastic aligners. When you come in for Invisalign, we will take a digital image of your teeth. This image is then sent to Invisalign, which will develop the optimal movements for your teeth to go from their current positions to a healthy, straight configuration. The computer will then break down that movement into short, discrete steps. Each of these steps are controlled by an aligner, which will move your teeth from the start of the step to the end.

In the past, everyone wore these aligners for two weeks, and Invisalign took about as much time as traditional braces. New innovations mean that many people can get by wearing their aligner for only one week–cutting treatment time in half!

When you finish your course of aligners, your teeth will be straight! As with other orthodontic treatments, you should wear a retainer to hold your teeth in place while the bones solidify around them. And occasional wear of your retainer can help you maintain straight smiles of a lifetime.
