A Surgery To Support Your Dental Implant

A sinus lift is a procedure that assists in the successful placement of a dental implant to restore missing teeth. Your dental implant post requires a dense enough jawbone to secure it permanently, but sometimes, the conditions that lead to missing teeth can cause you to lose bone density. We can perform a sinus lift to add bone to the gap between your molars and premolars, providing additional total support for your new prosthetic.

What Is A Sinus Lift?

Also called a sinus augmentation, a sinus lift adds bone to the upper jaw between the area that holds your molars and premolars. The new material is added between the jaw and maxillary sinuses on the sides of your nose. The “lift” portion of the procedure refers to the movement of your sinus membrane to create room for the additional bone.

Who Needs A Sinus Lift?

We perform this surgery when we need to create more bone height in your upper jaw or if your sinuses are too close to safely receive a dental implant. This can occur because:

  • Gum disease erodes healthy jawbone material
  • You do not have enough existing bone due to individual anatomy
  • Your sinuses are either too large or too close to place your implant. This is more common in older patients
  • Tooth loss leads to a lack of stimulation that signals the nervous system to maintain bone density

Where Does The Additional Bone Come From?

There are multiple possible sources to select from for performing a sinus lift bone augmentation. We could use a bone portion from your body, a cow bone, or a cadaver.

How Long Will I Take To Recover?

Following your sinus-lift procedure, you may experience discomfort for a few days. We will schedule an appointment to examine your healing around a week after surgery. We then wait for many months as the new bone integrates with your jawbone. Your recovery time may depend on the donor source, and we will let you know during your consultation.
